Aberdare National Park

This park is 100 km north of Nairobi and covers an area of about 760 km² of the Aberdare Mountain Range covering a wide landscape of 2100-4300 M above sea level. It has deep valleys intersected by streams, rivers and waterfalls and a dense forest cover. Depending on the altitude, the animals observed include the Lion, Elephant, Leopard, Rhino, several smaller cats, Warthog, Bushbuck, Eland, variety of monkeys and the rare Bongo. The park is known for making escapades, picnics, trout fishing and camping at various altitudes. Even bird viewing is rewarding with more than 250 species of birds available including the Francolin, Hawks, Eagles, Sunbirds, Plovers and the endangered Aberdare Cisticola.

A variety of accommodation is available including the Treetops and the Ark which provide night time wildlife viewing at the water-holes located next to the lodges. The park may be approached via two airstrips at Mweiga and Nyeri or by road 180 km from Nairobi via the Nairobi-Thika-Nyeri highway.
